The rhythm and vibration of the drums somehow positively affects body, mind and spirit. Not only from being a part of a community of wonderful people, and learning great skills through Mae's teaching, I always leave class feeling lighter and happier. Using both hands to learn the various rhythms is also great way to support a healthy brain! Driving up to the lush grounds of Drum for Fun, our friend group knew not what to expect. I myself was hoping for a folklore performance. Yet, we were welcomed by our most friendliest host, Mae, who opened her studio introduced us to the Djembe and Dun Dun drums. She was excellent in her instruction, story-telling and ability to get our boisterous group of eight to come together and make something close to beautiful music. That was after we laughed and giggled all the way through. But, best of all, this experience brought us closer as friends because it was truly transformative. I speak for myself when I say I felt the beats of the music move through me, leaving me wanting to learn more of this craft. If you’re looking for something extraordinary in Staunton, the DrumForFUN experience is not to be missed!

For nearly a year prior to the pandemic, I made some wonderful memories of Sunday afternoon "DrumForFUN" classes with Mae which I so looked forward to attending. Drumming is a passion for her and it shows! Sbe is knowledgeable in music she teaches, and is a kind and patient instructor who accepts you where you are. I am 75 year old and had always wished to somehow participate in drumming, and with Mae, I felt so much joy, such inspiration in inexplicable ways and had such soulful experiences! Unfortunately, I had some major life changes requiring a move back West; but, I will never forget drumming in Staunton!

I have always loved feeling the pulse of the drums in any music, but never had the chance to play. Finally, at age 50, I decided to give it a go! I tried teaching myself off YouTube, but that just led to frustration, so I joined Mae's classes. I was very nervous at first, as I’ve never done ANYTHING musical in my life but, on the very first day, Mae had me drumming and sounding good (at least to my ears!) with not just on the Djembe, but also on the Djuns. Mae is a great teacher who has the ability to see when a student is struggling with something and to change her approach to help out. Her classes are informative, full of laughter and rhythms; her students are welcoming and as willing to help a newbie as she is, and overall, just loads of great fun. My only wish is that my life would let me attend more classes and more regularly.

Drumming came into my life at a time when I needed it most - I was a new mother, in a new city, and in a very unhealthy phase of my life. I fell in love with the Djembe immediately and eagerly learned proper playing technique, the traditional West African rhythms and their history. Not only were the classes a blast, but we played our drums all around Austin - it was amazing! This wonderful community of drummers, the Djembe and its music held me up through a difficult phase of my life and helped me transform it into a happier, stronger and more empowered one full of rhythm! Why learn to play the djembe? Why not?!! As a new student, I must tell you...Mae's classes are SO much fun! We don't just do the same thing over and over; Mae gives you a rhythm, then off you go! You're actually playing West African music with the group! Of course, a little practice at home helps; but once you learn a rhythm, you can't wait to get back to class and play with everyone!
